You open the washer and the drum is still full of water. Before you bail it out with a cup, run through the usual suspects – in this order.
1. The drain filter. On most front-loaders it’s behind a small hatch at the bottom front. Lay down a towel, open it slowly, let the water out, and pull the filter – coins, hair pins and lint collect exactly here. A clogged filter is the single most common cause.
2. The drain hose. Check that the hose behind the machine isn’t kinked, pinched by the wall, or clogged where it meets the standpipe. If you can blow air through it freely, it’s not the hose.
3. The pump. If the filter and hose are clear but the machine hums at the drain stage without moving water – or is completely silent – the drain pump is likely done. A pump can also be jammed by debris that slipped past the filter; sometimes clearing it helps, but a worn impeller means replacement.
4. Control issues. If the cycle stops at random points, not just the drain stage, the problem may be the control board or a pressure switch reading a false water level – that’s technician territory.
Safety note: always unplug the machine and shut the water valves before opening anything.
